I don't claim to know much about how to be successful at committing crimes (having chosen a different line of work) but I can give aspiring felons one piece of advice:
If you're going to do a drive-by shooting,
before you fire the gun roll down the car window, dude.

Apparently they tracked him down by calling all the glass repair shops in the area and putting them on the lookout too.
These kind of people self-select against themselves in the gene pool (since he will be out of circulation for awhile in the slammer.)
